ABSEILING teddy bears, street theatre and storytelling were all part of the fun at Heanor's annual festival, which kicked off at the weekend.
The festival, which ends on Saturday and includes a total of 22 events, began on Friday and has seen a wide range of activities taking place for people of all ages, including the annual May Day event.

The festival is set to continue throughout the week with a storytelling cafe tomorrow at 7pm at Heanor Antique Centre cafe on Ilkeston Road and street theatre and street dance in the town on Saturday.

Sharon Brown, secretary of Heanor Festival Trust, said: "The street theatre went down really well. Three actors dressed as French waiters and interacted with shoppers and later they dressed as the secret service. We got a good response.

"The teddy bears' picnic was popular and 400 people attended the heritage exhibition.

She added: "An evening with the author Stephen Booth has sold out and generally the response has been really positive and we are hoping to build on it and have a bigger street theatre next year."
The street theatre on Saturday will see students from Heanor Gate Science College performing on stage.

The festival, which includes scarecrows made by school children on display in the town costs around £3,500 to stage. This is raised through funding – for example, the story telling event was funded by the Amber Valley Borough Council enabling arts grant.

Sharon added: "We want to build on it each year to become an established festival in the events calendar – it would be nice if we got as big as Ashbourne."

The annual festival, packed full of activities returns to Heanor next week following months of preparation and hard work.
Heanor Festival will run from Saturday, May 1 until the following Saturday, May 8' and has a huge range of events taking place for people of all ages, including a tea dance, street theatre and story telling.

There will be 22 events in all and the week kicks off with a teddy bear's picnic at Shipley Country Park and street theatre throughout Heanor town centre on Saturday, May 1.

Sharon Brown, a volunteer, who is part of a team of nine who organise the event, said: "There are activities to suit all ages. We want to build on it each year to become an established festival in the events calendar – it would be nice if we got as big as Ashbourne."

New to the festival this year will be a street theatre where a theatre company will go around the town taking on different characters and interacting with people in the town.

Children from schools in the area will also be involved in the festival by making scarecrows from recycled materials to display around Heanor.
The festival costs around £3,500 to stage, which is raised through funding.

Sharon, who has been involved with the festival for five years, added: "We want everybody to join in and try new experiences."

Taking place throughout the week will be a exhibition on Heanor's industrial heritage at the old fire station on the Market Place, a quiz on the town's history and a art and flower exhibition by students of Aldercar Community Language College on display at Heanor Methodist Church.

On Tuesday May 4, a talk will be given at Heanor Library by local crime author Stephen Booth.

The annual May Day event takes place on Monday, May 3, on the Market Place.
